Hi.

Welcome to the Active Air research blog by Bovitz, Inc. We're documenting our adventures in helping build a new, game-changing filter system. Hope you enjoy!

A Few More Improvements to Speck

A Few More Improvements to Speck

Speck has been a great addition thus far; we love having access to data about our in-home air quality. That said, there a few more things we’ve discovered this week that would make things even easier and better. Last week, we shared our initial thoughts here; below is a handful of additional items we’ve realized this week.

  • Tell us what the data means. There's nothing to compare your data to. We have to take an extra step and go online to see how good the reading is. Meaning, what are the average readings for a location in my area?
  • We wish there was a charger. The monitor cuts off completely when you unplug it; we wish it could be mobile, so it can be carried it from room to room without having to hunt for an open plug. Also, when I do plug it back it in, it warms up too slow.
  • Add a note to the instructions that informs us we must have the latest iOS. One community member notes how he's just now gotten Speck up and running: "If the system requirements had been included early on, that would have saved me significant time and frustration."
  • What changes Speck scores? It feels like when the thermostat shuts off, readings go up. Further, higher readings feel like the result of movement near the monitor, probably due to particles being kicked up. Giving us a full list of what drives scores up and down, including things to take corrective action for and things just to watch and monitor would be great.
  • The monitor screen is VERY bright. There should be an adjuster on it or a way to turn the backlight off completely.
