Hi.

Welcome to the Active Air research blog by Bovitz, Inc. We're documenting our adventures in helping build a new, game-changing filter system. Hope you enjoy!

Speck Likes: Data Access; Dislikes: What to do?

It’s pretty simple. On the positive side, we love the easy data access Speck provides. At the same time, we wish we really knew what this data means and what to do about it. Below are a handful of likes and dislikes we wanted to convey along these lines and more. But, before that, we love what Evangeline had to say:

I think Speck takes the whole process to another level. I don’t have to just rely on my phone app to see about my air quality. It has even made my children become more aware of the air quality at home. They were curious about the Speck device and then could easily see the connection between the filter in the furnace and the air in the house. It’s a great product/concept. Thanks for letting me be a part of the study!!

We couldn't agree more!

Speck Likes

  • Access: Indoor air quality on the spot!
  • Sense of cleanliness: It’s helpful for my household because (a low air quality score) gives me the feeling that it’s time to do more cleaning inside the house.
  • A visual reminder: It’s a continuous reminder about my home air quality and to make sure that I change filter on time as well.
  • Sense of security/safety: It's very helpful because of my son’s asthma.
  • Problem identification: From room to room, it helps isolate problem areas.
  • Easy to read: The display is easy to read.
  • Good instructions: Simple and easy instructions.

Speck Dislikes

  • App pairing: I have no idea why I couldn't pair the Filtrete app with Speck data.
  • Too big: The monitor size doesn’t allow for it to be inconspicuous.
  • Lack of mobility: I wish Speck was battery powered, so it can be transferred to room to room easily without a cord.
  • Design: The design is a little awkward, and the screen is low tech.
  • No education: The data would be useful if I understood what the readings meant. The screen telling me it is “good” is helpful, but I would like to better understand what the reading is measuring and what an acceptable level should be.
  • Fluctuating data without reason: I don't get what the numbers mean, and they are always changing. It makes me think something’s wrong – either with the monitor or my air quality.
